Write for us

We assign most of our articles to specific writers. But we do welcome articles from freelance writers and from our readers.

LET US KNOW

If you'd like to write for us, start by sending us an e-mail. Tell us what your article is about. Type "article idea" on the subject line of your e-mail, so we'll be sure to find it. We'll let you know if your article is one we'd be interested in publishing.

If you have a great story, but you're not such a great writer, go ahead and e-mail us about your article idea. We can always edit the writing, but we can't always dream up amazing stories.

FOLLOW OUR THREE STEPS

Once we've given your story the thumbs-up, do the following:

1. Follow our writer's guidelines

Our main goal is to feature articles that are engaging, short and to the point, and meaningful to our readers. While you're writing, make sure your article is:

  • Short. Keep your article length under 650 words. That’s about one page in our magazine. Some articles may be even shorter than that.
  • Succinct. Say a lot and say it well in as few words as possible. Keep your introduction brief, and eliminate a conclusion; the body of your article should say it all.
  • Super clear. Your article should make complete sense and be easy-to-understand.
  • Smooth. Your information should flow smoothly and logically from sentence to sentence and from paragraph to paragraph.
  • Snappy. Maintain a lively and brisk pace from start to finish, so you’ll hold the interest of the readers.
  • Significant. Your article’s topic as well as all the information in your article should be highly-meaningful to the readers.
  • Subject-sticking. Huh? That means the article should stick to the subject you've chosen, not wander all about. Yes, that alll-important topic sentence that your English teacher hounded you about is truly vital.
  • Satisfying. The article should be interesting and engaging and leave readers wanting to read more articles written by you.
  • Stellar. Make sure it's the best article you can create. Proofread it, and then read it aloud to yourself. Also ask another person or two to read your article and offer feedback.
2. Include a bio and photos
We ask that you submit a bio and photos along with your article.

  • Bio. Write a couple of brief sentences about yourself, which we'll publish along with your article. Include your name, a bit about yourself, your experience with horses, and, if you wish, your contact information. The bio is not included in your word count.
  • Photos. Snap some great photos to go with your article. The photos should be high-resolution—300 dpi or better. We don't need a slew of photos; simply pick your favorite two or three photos for the article.

3. Submit your article

We only accept e-mailed submissions, so don’t snail-mail stories to us or send them on disks. Here's the process for e-mailing your article to us after we've approved it:

  • Write an e-mail. Write us a brief e-mail, explaining any new information about your story that we don't already know. Type “article submission” on the subject line of the e-mail.
  • Attach your article. Attach your article to your e-mail. Don’t cut-and-paste your article into the body of the e-mail. Make sure your bio is included with your article.
  • Attach your photos. Attach your photo or photos to the e-mail. Don’t embed your photos in the body of the e-mail. And don’t send us more than a few photos; pick the best two or three photos and send those.
  • Address the e-mail. Send it to kathleen@honesthorsesmagazine.com.

WARNING! OUR EDITING STAFF JUST LOVES TO EDIT!

Our editing staff will edit your article as necessary. We primarily edit for spelling and grammar; clarity of information; flow of sentences and paragraphs; and length of article (it has to to fit into the allotted space, along with the title, photos, sidebars, and other graphic elements). Our main goal when editing an article is to make sure our readers will be able to fully understand it, benefit from it, and enjoy it all the way through.

We want you to be happy with your article, too. Let us know if you'd like to read over an edited draft of your article before we publish it.
